Winchester 1894
Carabine de sport Winchester modèle 1894 Fancy, fabriquée sur commande spéciale vers 1910. Cette carabine présente une gravure Winchester n° 1 avec des incrustations d'or sur le canon, la bouche et la culasse, l’avant-bras, le boîtier de culasse, le verrou, le chien, le levier et la plaque de couche. Des scènes de chasse incrustées d'or, bordées d'incrustations d'or, ornent les deux faces du boîtier de culasse.
Une gravure quasi identique est illustrée et décrite dans l'édition de 1897 de « WINCHESTER HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS », qui précise : « Cette ornementation comprend des incrustations, des gravures, du damasquinage et des sculptures à la main.
Le boîtier de culasse est richement gravé de volutes arabesques sur ses deux faces, mises en valeur par des bordures artistiques ». Les volutes et les bordures incrustées d'or se retrouvent sur le dessus et le dessous du boîtier de culasse, ainsi que sur le dessus du verrou. Le canon est gravé de volutes au niveau de la culasse et de la bouche. Les côtés et le dessus du chien, les côtés et le dessous du levier et le talon de la plaque de couche sont finement gravés de volutes et incrustés de lignes d'or.
La signature du maître graveur John Ulrich est estampillée en minuscules caractères sur le dessous de l’arme, derrière la détente.
La crosse et le fût sont en noyer à grain fin et veiné, orné de volutes sculptées en relief de style Winchester A et d'une finition polie.
Comme indiqué, la famille Ulrich était la plus grande dynastie de graveurs d'armes à feu du XIXe siècle et était également réputée pour son talent en sculpture sur bois.
La poignée pistolet est munie d'un embout en caoutchouc dur noir portant l'inscription « WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS ». Une petite plaque ovale en or, gravée d'un blason très détaillé, est incrustée sur la partie inférieure de la crosse.
Le fusil possède un canon octogonal de 66 cm (26 pouces) et un magasin « pleine longueur ». Le canon est équipé d'un guidon Lyman « Winchester Express » à grain d'argent et d'une hausse de type « corne de cerf ». Le canon, le magasin, l'embout du fût, le boîtier de culasse et la plaque de couche en acier en forme de croissant sont bronzés, tandis que le chien, la détente et le levier d'armement sont trempés en couleur.
Le côté gauche du canon porte l'inscription estampillée sur deux lignes : « MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894. » devant la hausse. Sur le côté gauche du canon, juste en dessous de la hausse, on peut lire : « -NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER ». Le calibre « 30 W.C.F.» est gravé sur le côté gauche du canon, juste devant le boîtier de culasse. Les poinçons ovales Winchester « W/P » sont apposés sur le dessus du canon et du boîtier de culasse. La queue de culasse supérieure porte l'inscription estampillée sur trois lignes : « MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. », entourée d'un ovale gravé. Le numéro de série, « 590859 », est estampillé sur le dessous du boîtier de culasse.
Le fusil est fourni avec un coffret en chêne à garnitures en laiton. L'intérieur du coffret est moulé au fusil et doublé de feutrine bleue.
Le coffret contient : une boîte incomplète de cartouches
Winchester 30 W.C.F. avec étiquette en papier rouge, un tube de graisse pour
armes Winchester et une baguette de nettoyage Marbles en laiton, articulée et en
trois parties, avec son étui en tissu.
Special
order Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured circa 1910. The
rifle features Winchester No. 1 engraving with gold inlaid bands on the barrel
muzzle and breech, forearm cap, receiver, bolt, hammer, lever and buttplate and
solid gold inlaid game scenes with gold inlaid borders on both sides of the
receiver.
Nearly
identical engraving is illustrated and described in the 1897 Edition of
"WINCHESTER HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" which states: "This ornamentation embraces
inlaying, engraving, damascening and hand carving.
The
receiver is richly engraved on both sides with arabesque scrolls set off by
artistic border work." The scrollwork and gold inlaid borders include the top
and bottom of the receiver and the top of the bolt. The barrel is engraved with
scrolls at the breech and the muzzle. The sides and top of the hammer, sides and
bottom of the lever and heel of the buttplate are engraved with fine scrollwork
and inlaid with gold lines.
The
signature of master engraver John Ulrich is stamped in tiny letters on the lower
tang behind the trigger.
The
forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with
Winchester Style A relief carved scrollwork and a highly polished piano finish.
As
noted, the Ulrich family was of course the greatest family dynasty of firearms
engravers of the 19th century and were also highly regarded for their wood
carving ability.
The
pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed " WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS".
A small
gold oval plate engraved with a highly detailed crest is inlaid on the lower
portion of the stock.
The
rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has
a Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with silver bead and a buckhorn
sporting style rear sight.
The
barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and crescent steel buttplate are blued
and the hammer, trigger and loading lever are color casehardened.
The left
barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE
WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894."
ahead of the rear sight. "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER"
is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel immediately below
the rear sight.
The
caliber designation: "30 W.C.F." is stamped on the left side of the barrel
immediately in front of the receiver in an engraved panel. Winchester oval "W/P"
proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver.
The
upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN
U.S. PAT. OFF." in three lines surrounded by an engraved oval border. The serial
number, "590859", is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver.
The
rifle is complete with a oak case with brass fittings. The case interior is form
fitted to the rifle and has blue baize lining.
The case
contains: a partial box of Winchester 30 W.C.F. cartridges with red paper label,
a tube of Winchester gun grease, and a three-piece brass, jointed, Marbles
cleaning rod with cloth case.
