Norman Johann
In June
J. O. contacted me to obtain more information about a pinfire revolver in his
possession.

already had tried various sources to get more information about this revolver
but without much succes.
After
searching the internet I wrote an email to the arms museum in Tula.
To my
surprise I got an answer from the Tula museum; see the followin Cyrillic text:
Уважаемый господин Оклоен!
Иоганн Норман – оружейный мастер и конструктор, родом из г. Любека (Германия),
в 50-60 гг.
XIX
в. работал на Тульском оружейном заводе.
В 1860 г. разработал револьверное (барабанное) ружье. Оно заряжалось стальными
цилиндрическими гильзами с выступающими брантрубками, на которые надевались
капсюли (по типу шпилечного патрона Лефоше).
В 1865-1866 гг. занимался переделкой английской капсюльной казнозарядной
винтовки Терри, внес в ее конструкцию около 20 изменений. В 1866 г. этот образец
был принят на вооружение российской армии под официальным названием «6-линейная
скорострельная капсюльная винтовка системы Терри-Нормана». За это Норман был
удостоен ордена Станислава 3-й степени и получил денежное вознаграждение в
размере 500 руб.
Калибр винтовки Терри-Нормана составлял 6 линий (15,24 мм), вес 4,4 кг, длина
1340 мм. Патрон к винтовке имел тонкую бумажную гильзу с войлочным поддоном.
Затвор скользящий со складывающейся при запирании канала ствола рукояткой.
На международной выставке в Париже 1867 г. винтовка, изготовленная на Тульском
оружейном заводе, обратила на себя внимание простотой устройства и качеством
отделки.
Также известно, что Норман занимался и изготовлением охотничьего оружия.
Подтверждением тому служит хранящаяся в Государственном Эрмитаже одноствольная
охотничья винтовка, сделанная в Образцовой мастерской Тульского оружейного
завода. На стволе винтовки надпись «Система Норманъ».
К сожалению, мы не располагаем сведениями о деятельности И. Нормана после его
работы в Туле. Но известен образец капсюльного охотничьего двуствольного ружья
(имеется у частного коллекционера), на котором стоит клеймо «I.
NORMANN
in.
LUBECK».
Возможно, что мастер вернулся на Родину. Также его имя упоминается в справочнике
«Heer
E.
Der
Neue
Stokel».

Johann Norman - gunsmith and designer , originally from the city of Lübeck (Germany ) at 50-60 years . XIX century. worked at the Tula Arms Plant.
In 1860,
developed a revolver (drums ) gun. It charges the steel cylinder liners with

Unfortunately , we do not have information about the activities of J. Norman after his work in Tula. But the known sample capsule double-barreled hunting rifle (available from a private collector ), which is a brand «I. NORMANN in. LUBECK ». It is possible that the master has returned to his homeland. Also, his name is mentioned in the handbook «Heer E. Der Neue Stokel ».

So, this information leads to the
following:
--“Johannes
Norman” inscribed his name “I. Normann” with an “I” and double “N,” just as on
this revolver considered a “master” (мастер) by the Tula Arms Museum. Apparently
not just a run-of-the mill gunsmith, but in charge of the design shop at the
Tula Arms Plant (as evidenced by the “Norman System” inscribed on the Hermitage
rifle and the credit given to him for design of the Russian army’s standard
rifle) not Austrian, as in some references, but German, from Luebeck.
His work was
exhibited and praised at international exhibits ( Paris, 1867)
He designed the
standard rifle that was adopted by the Russian army in 1866, based on his design
changes to the English Terry rifle, for which he received the Order of Stanislav
and 500 rubles cash award (equivalent to about $60,000 in today’s dollars (PPP)
He apparently
made hunting weapons for the Russian aristocracy while in Tula, as evidenced by
a hunting rifle in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg (The former imperial palace.
Likely for the Tsar or his family?).
After supplying
Mr. O.
with this information he auctioned his revolver on October 15th for $60.500,-:
